Hello, hello!  So nice to be here!  No, no, don’t be checking your calendars. It’s not Wednesday.  It is Friday and Marc was feeling a tad rushed and short on time and mentioned to me that Heroes was going to post late. “Do you want more help?” I asked, sending him another story.  “Or, you could do it,” he volleyed.  “Do you want me to?” I asked.  Stupid question.  Here I am.

This Heroes thing has become rather important to all of us. A bright moment, sharing the good news, amidst all the hate and anger; never more important than now as people are getting more and more aggravated and impatient with the situation. So, shall I stop dilly-dallying and get on with it?

Here in Canada, Tim Horton’s is the top dog when it comes to coffee and doughnuts (donuts, for you folks south of the border from me).  Call it the sort of equivalent to Dunkin’ Donuts, if you will.  While Timmies is a Canadian thing, they can be found in some of the States, including Mr. Sorryless’ very own Pennsylvania so I felt this was a right appropriate story.

Residents in nursing homes are particularly cut off from society with this current situation.  Of course, they are missing their families but they were also missing their sweet treats.  So the staff from the Dr. John M. Gillis Memorial Lodge in Belfast, P.E.I., brought the experience to them, right down to the drive-thru. Check out this video here.

Ryan Reynolds is buying 385 pizzas for Kits grads from Nat's Pizzeria

Ryan Reynolds is not just a pretty Canadian (sorry folks) face. He is funny and generous.  Not only did he and his gorgeous wife, Blake Lively, donate one million dollars to food banks in Canada and the US to help low-income families and vulnerable individuals, suffering during this pandemic, he was also asked to give a commencement speech for this year’s grads from Kitsilano Secondary School, in British Columbia, where he, himself, graduated from.  You can read about it here. Not only was he funny, but he also gave some good advice, and while he was at it, he threw in a pizza for each and every grad.

 

We all know how Marc feels about the Dolphins… And not only are they gonna be a force on the field, eventually, we know it, right, Marc? but some of their players are doing overtime. It’s not only about football for some. It’s about helping because they can.

Albert Wilson, Adrian Colbert, Allen Hurns and Davon Godchaux have all taken it upon themselves to give in their own way.

Colbert, the “Pelaton Don” a safety who played at the University of Miami, is pedaling his way to raise funds for the Jackson Health System through his love of the Peloton.

Godchaux has teamed up with Papa John’s to deliver pizzas to the hospital healthcare workers at Jackson Health.

Wilson knows what life is like in the foster care system, having grown up in said system. The pandemic put a halt to all extra help these kids and caretakers need so his foundation has stepped in.

Hurns, through his 88 Blessings Foundation, is helping the high school students robbed of normal graduation ceremonies because of the coronavirus. They supply celebratory care packages on top of hope, love, motivation and encouragement. He even plans to mentor them as they move forward.

Nathan Fillion (shoot, another Canadian?) might be known for the shows “Castle” and “The Rookie” but I loved him in the mismanaged-by-Fox-so-cut-short-needlessly fabulous show “Firefly”… but I digress.

Can you imagine? You get to Costco, your card refuses to work, you get all frustrated and the attendant comes by, inserts his own card and pays for your gas. What?  You offer to come back and pay him back and he says no, please, just pay it forward.  Well I’ll be….

So what happens when you are the mother of a celebrity?  Yep, you guessed it, that was Nathan Fillion’s mom that Les Thompson helped and when Nathan found out, he Instagrammed his thank you and said:  “You restore my faith in humanity, sir. My dad and I are sending three iPads and headphones to a nearby senior care facility so that folks there can visit with their families. Right now, we could all stand to be a little less afraid, and a little more Les.” Read the full story and check out the video (that refuses to embed) here,

And finally, when you think of Pirate Radio, what comes to mind? The movie with Philip Seymour Hoffman about wild and illegal radio station on the high seas bringing that “filthy rock and roll” to millions? Welll…. not in this case. Radio Recliner is a pirate radio station run and hosted exclusively by elderly DJs from assisted living communities across the United States. This was supposed to be for one hour per day for thirty days. They became so popular they are up to 18 DJs and even play music on a loop when there is no programming. This is a generation that was raised on radio, how wonderful that they now have this to keep them connected and less lonely during these crazy days.  Full story is right here.

 

The things people do to help others are not always grandiose and extravagant and that’s okay.  They are doing something, anything, within their own power to alleviate the suffering, bring the joy, light a light.  If everyone did that one little thing and passed it on, asking that it be paid forward, what a wonderful world this would be. Grumbling about our current situation, experienced all over the world, is not productive. Let’s show a little patience, a little love, a little kindness. Let’s be better and do something. Anything.

      It’s one of the reasons I love Marc’s Heroes post so much. When it was suggested he put only Heroes and drop the Zeros, I think more and more of us appreciated it. Especially with the crud going on out there. Thank you for for this!

  2. I am so proud to be a Canadian. We have liquor distilleries making hand sanitizers, Tim Hortons handing out coffee and sandwiches to hospital employees and people like you Dale reminding us of the good things people do.

    Heroes representing!!!

    I am sitting here, smiling this dopey smile and . . . I think my allergies are getting the best of me because I’m tearing up as well. But it’s an okay allergy, because the smile says so. And the smile says so because this is fan . . . freaking . . TASTIC! And yes, I knew I was gonna love it, I even told you so. 🙂

    Now . . nothing against Timmie’s because to each donut lover his and her own . . but when you same differenced it with Dunkin, I kinda said to myself “Nah . .” Because yes, I am one of those heathens here in the states who doesn’t dig on Dunkin, at all. But hey . . what Timmie’s done did for those folks? THAT means more than donut preferences or anything else. It means everything.

    I knew Ryan Reynolds was too beautiful to be American. And yanno, him and Blake Lively? Together? Really people, let’s spread out the perfect genetic games just a tad . . . don’t be hoarding it all! But for the beautiful thing they did with their donation, I guess they’re allowed to couple. And double kudos to Ryan for coming through for those grads, with a pizza per student to boot! What a man, what a man, what a man . . . what a mighty good man.

    Muchas gracias for letting the Dolphins in. They’re a boomer future stock that you’ll be happy to invest in now, because I guarantee(ish) they’ll make you look like a genius in a couple years. AND in the meantime, they’ve got some really good guys doing some really good things. Their outreach, their compassion and they’re remembering what it’s all about is the stuff of champions.

    Les (Is More) Thompson’s good deed came to light, and while I know he wasn’t looking for any attention, I’m glad he got some love for what he did. Good for him, good for Nathan Fillion and like you said, good for all of us when good things happen to good people.

    Pirate Radio sounds like some bad ass stuff, and then you read up and you realize it’s so much more fun than that even. And its growth speaks to the value of these peeps, and how it’s not rear view mirror time for them . . not even close. And it’s not grandiose, but it is beautiful and right and its things like this that make a world a home. For all of us.

    All beautiful stories, and you really have this Heroes thing down, don’t you?

      Now, I’M sitting here with a big dopey smile. You told me so (I still think you’re biased).

      Are you ready for this? I, am a heathen in my own country. I can’t stand Timmies. So.. Yeah, they kind are in the same boat 😉 However, this was such a beautiful thing to do.

      They are a disgustingly gorgeous duo, aren’t they? Very generous and so sweet. I dunno if you caught his speech? It was rather hilarious…

      Well. It is YOUR blog… the least I could do is let one of your stories in 😉 And this was a worthy story to tell. They will be on top again… we’ll see it.

      I’m glad Les did get the recognition (thank goodness his wife is on the ball and saw the Instagram thanks! That the Fillions went to seek him out and let him know that his good deed was definitely being forwarded is a beautiful thing.

      I love that Pirate Radio – bad-ass dudes in their 80’s (ok, maybe some in their 70’s and others in their 90’s for all we know) Such a small thing when you think of it but yeah… makes this big-ass world a home.

      • I may be biased, but that doesn’t mean that this Heroes post wasn’t spot on beautiful, because it was.

        We are simpaticompanions (my word). Yeah, my sister hates that I don’t dig on Dunkin . . but that’s okay. I suffer her poor taste when it comes to donuts so we’re even!

        As for Timmie’s what a really cool experience they gave those folks.

        Disgustingly gorgeous sums it up perfectly. And yes, I watched it. Soooo Ryan.

        Miami scored without even playing a game. This HAS to bode well for the season, I’m thinking.

        Two Heroes in one fell swoop . . Thompson and Fillion . . for holding to this good deed and making sure others learned of it for the smiles it evokes.

        The 80’s is a good median for Pirate Radio. Bad ass doesn’t have an age, which is a hopeful message.

            I don’t dig on anything Dunkin. The donuts always taste stale to me and the coffee is forgettable. And really, coffee should be spot on if you sell donuts. Just saying.

            We have a place here called Duck Donuts, and they make the most obscenely decadent donuts. So damn good. But . . . their coffee blows. And it miffs me to no end, because you HAVE to supply a good cuppa to go along with the donut as far as I’m concerned.

            Which is so much better than the Americanized “Wooo!” . . . which ruins live music. As per Nirvana’s epic NY recording and Clapton’s Layla. The dumbasses who go “Wooo!” ruin the genius of those moments.

            I’m not a big donuts person myself, so when I go for one it’s got to be different. The traditionals do nothing for me. My favorite donut of all time is from a local apple orchard. In the fall they do these Apple Cider donuts that melt in your mouth. Unreal.

            It’s awkward when peeps put us in these spots. I had this “Whoo!” conversation with someone at work a while back and I said something like “Treat the performance as if you were at the Opera and shut the fuck up”. To which they replied that opera was boring. So this person was clueless to the lesson.

  8. Ryan Reynolds and Nathan Fillion, along with the Fabulous Miss Dale underscore my love of Canadians in general. Folks south of the provinces would do well to emulate their Northern neighbors. Bravo on a job well done, sweet lady.
