There are officially ninety one days remaining in 2020, not like I’m counting the minutes . . . yet. And I guess the best thing you can say about this year of living dangerously is that Charles Manson isn’t around to say I told you so.
Not that it’s all bad, really. In fact, there’s a lot of it that’s really been kind of great. And maybe you won’t find it on your cable news networks, or on the front pages of your local newspapers. But no matter, because the good stuff still counts. And apologies ahead of time for the mugshot below, but I think this imbecile resembles the facial composite of our otherwise forgettable year. But no worries, because there’s plenty of pushback to that ugly.
So let’s get rolling . . .
Shawn Marshall Myers of Hughsville, Maryland was sentenced to a year behind bars for throwing several large parties- in violation of the state’s emergency order. But really, could we add another year? For that hair? . . . .
The team formerly known as Redskins ain’t possessing much in the way of positive shout outs. But for their backup quarterback Alex Smith. The former first rounder pick has worked himself all the way back from a devastating leg injury suffered during a game almost two years ago. He underwent 17 surgeries after the injury resulted in a flesh eating disease which threatened his life. Fast forward to now, and he’s made it all the way back. The selfish part of me wishes he would retire rather than risk anything further, but the dude’s heart and soul is the kind of stuff future players should be inspired by.
And speaking of kick ass QB’s, Joe Montana was the epitome of a big game gunslinger in his day; winning four Super Bowls in four tries. But as a grandfather, Joe Cool outdid all of his on field exploits recently when he saved his nine month old grandchild from a would be kidnapper. The incident happened at his Malibu home, where Joe and his wife thwarted the attempt and had the intruder arrested. I’m betting he’d score that as the biggest win of his life.
Next up, I’ve got a couple of stories that are belated in the telling by yours truly, but no less beautiful in the deeds that were done.
First up we have 18 year Justin Gavin, who didn’t even have time to put on his cape after he spotted an SUV that had caught fire. He gave chase and finally was able to catch up with the vehicle once it had come to a stop, after which he helped remove a mother and her three children (1, 4 and 9 years old), who had been trapped inside. The Waterbury Police Department honored Gavin with a “Challenge Coin”
“I hope that when you have that coin it just reminds you of this day and you can reflect back on all the good that came out of this for you and that family that you saved,” said Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo.
There are four people who get to wake up this morning thanks to the actions of this kid. Four stories that keep getting written and one big reason to believe that superheroes are real.
DeAndre Ware’s boxing career is currently in a downward slope after his loss to Steven Nelson by TKO in a super middleweight bout early last month. But it was Ware’s actions before the fight even took place that speak to the true value of the man. When Pete Susens- a coordinator for Top Rank Boxing- collapsed during weigh-ins, Ware performed chest compressions that ended up saving his life. You see, Ware also happens to be a firefighter in his hometown of Toledo, Ohio. So while boxing is a passion, his everyday existence is playing out in a ring where the stakes are much higher. And he’s winning. Big time.
And now Imma dish up a double dose from the Cincinnati Kid over at the blog formerly (and still) known as aFrankAngle. This first story, well . . some of you already know it so I’ll just include the video above. It’s good stuff, so if you haven’t checked it out, please do.
The second part of Frank’s double shot of good feeling tonic . . . wait for it . . . delivers. The Valdez family are bringing the ‘social’ to social media with a gift they recently presented to a very special person in their lives. Eighty nine year old Derlin Newey is their pizza delivery man- they ask for him every time they place an order. They started recording his deliveries for their TikTok channel @vendingheads because they love the guy so much.
“It’s insane. Everybody loves him,” said Carlos Valdez. They love the smiles he brings to their faces every time he throws down his signature phrase “Hello, are you looking for some pizza?”
Eighty nine years old and working thirty hours a week because he can’t make ends meet on social security alone. And so the family that’s come to love him decided to ask for donations from their more than 53,000 TikTok followers. They were able to raise $12,000 for Newey. After which they presented him with a great big check, with lots of hugs attached to it.
“He needed this. I’m just glad we could help him,” said Valdez. “We just need to treat people with kindness and respect the way he does. He stole our hearts.”
It can be so easy to let the cynics win the days, especially these days. But you really don’t have to look very hard to find out just how wrong they are about us humans. Because we’re not doomed. We’re not defeated. We’re not hopeless creatures in a slow march to the end of the sidewalk. We’re more than that, so much more than that. And when the world gives us precious little?
We give it everything we have.
Great stories. Props To Alex Smith for his determination. Big win for Montana. Thanks for using my submissions, including the Waterbury kid.

Some extra special Super Heroes this week ending with a lovely musical tribute to Ms. Reddy. Her clear sweet voice will be missed.
Have to confess. the Spaghetti-O story especially brought tears to my eyes and heart. With the recent news and some personal setbacks, your feel-good post really hit the spot. Bigly. Blessings to you and all your contributing ‘editors.’

Glad I achieved some bigly feel goods for you, Ms Monika. You most certainly deserve each and every one of them.

B,
Ninety-one days, eh? Wow… where does the time fly?
Myers is a dumbass and I am rather glad he got thrown in the slammer for ignoring the emerg state order.
I’m with you on Alex Smith. While I am super happy for him that he has recovered from all the hell he went through, I wish he would retire, too, instead of risking himself. But whatcha gonna do?
Way to go, Joe!!
Justin Gavin is the epitome of Hero. Holy moly… A Challenge Coin – worth a purple heart!
DeAndre Ware’s quick actions are not surprising, given he is a hero in his day-to-day work life. Fabulous
One again, I cannot access the video that you gave no deets for so I can’t even look up a version of the story for your Canadian peeps! deets, please…
Ah wow… how heartwarming a story is the Valdez/Derlin Newey story. How awful that an 89-year old MUST work to make ends meet. To do so because he loves it is one thing, but to have to? Thank goodness for the generosity of the Valdez family to raise funds for him. Beauty.
And c’mon. Ending this with the wonderful Helen Reddy? You ARE the man.

Is that what it’s been doing? Flying? Right into the fiery pits?
Myers is like so many others. They flout these orders, they cry about their constitutional rights (which only shows their ignorance since this is not a matter of said rights) and they endanger those who abide. Stick them on an island, I say.
Alex is a favorite sports person of mine. I hope he stays healthy and I hope he stays in the game in whatever capacity, because the sport is better off with peeps like him.
Go Joe!
Gavin didn’t think twice. And he doesn’t need a cape.
Ware may never win a title, but in the ring of life, he’s definitely a champion.
A Spaghettios story about a child with autism.
Here is where social media was used for good rather than stupid. And good for the Valdez family and their followers, that they can all come together like that to bring some joy to a person’s life.
She is the WOMAN!

At sonic speed, it has.
Yes, let’s get an island and dump the lot onto it with no way of being able to return.
With good reason. I hope he remains healthy and does what he came back to do.
Gavin is amazing.
I’ll need more than that if I’m to find the story. I’m feeling very left out and this two weeks in a row.
Yes! Social Media is not all crap. It can and is often used for good. You just have to filter…
She was, indeed.

Yes, no return shipping involved in this transaction.
I always worry about an athlete who comes back from such an injury. Because their decision to return has to do mostly with the pull they have to the game rather than common sense.
Really, he is.

It’s better for you. The world as we know it is growing hollow as a result of everybody having an opinion that only rhymes with their own. The more ‘open’ we get, the more closed we have become.

The whole Block Editor thing is very discouraging. WP is actually one the last bastions of my social media presence and I don’t want to say goodbye to it just yet, but I wouldn’t hesitate if they keep marginalizing the people who do not ask for anything more than a simple platform.

I feel your pain.
And I, for one – no, for many – would hate to see you go.
As long as there are ways to work around it or to use it in its most simple form, they might not lose too many users…might

I agree. If you sign up for something, you expect that thing to deliver. If it does for years, you stay. To decide to force your users to change because they’re bored, is not right

It’s part of a larger picture for the company, seeing as how they have corned the market. They’re able to affect change according to their balance sheets with little regard to the users. It’s how cable became bigger than US Steel ever was. Grow your brand and then screw over the people who have no choice but to follow. Thing is WP is going to learn the equivalent of “cutting the cord” if they don’t watch it.

I know. It’s like our energy company. They have the monopoly and our hands are tied. We need heat.
I, for one, hope it rethinks its brand and considers its users.
There are other platforms out there.

Well done. Pilgrim. Only Ninety-one days more to lay on this nail bed called 2020. Aw, we can do it. We’ve come this far. This post had some of the best. That pizza guy warmed my heart by being out there and in control of his life. TIC TOC tips will sure help offset some things. The guy with the hair looks like he would make a sound icon for Tiny. I may have to borrow his likeness someday. The Spagettio story tugged at the heart. I loved Justin’s pluck. I also loved the way you framed the four lives, Marc. Genius. I’ve had a crush on Helen Reddy forever. I love kick-ass women, and she had a soft way of being strong. Well done with the song.

I love the pizza guy story. And what a great idea by the Valdez family, to reach out like this and to make his way a little easier.
Haha! Yeah, I’m telling you he should have gotten time for that hair.
That Spaghettios story is really special
One more reason why you and me are simpatico. Because Helen Reddy has always been a crush of mine, for the very same reason.
Thanks Sheriff

Now I want a SUV with a kid who comes with it. Nothing like a little hero to conjure up some much needed hope. Joe Montana looks pretty good, and yes, a cobalt blue Mohawk ain’t cuttin’ the mustard.
As for Frank, he’s so likable in every way, he should run for office, don’t ya think Mr. Imma? Would you speak to him please???

You and me both!
Joe is still every bit as cool as he was back in the day. A favorite Joe Montana story, if you’ll humor me? . . . .
It was a Super Bowl, in Miami. Joe’s team was trailing by three with just over three minutes to go when he took the field to try and lead them on a miracle comeback. They were pinned back at their own eight yard line, so things looked rather bleak for Joe and Co. Well, right in the middle of this desperation attempt, Joe is in the huddle calling a play and he looks over to the stands and says to his teammates “Hey look, it’s John Candy!”. They looked at each other in amazement. Here was their QB with everything on the line, and he wasn’t nervous in the least. He ended up tossing the game winning TD pass with half a minute to go. And that’s why he was Joe Cool.
Frank has me as his campaign manager whenever he says the word.

Hi – the song is playing now and it is smooth and was a nice finish to this post
–
and two comments – first – the abduction attempt – glad Joe stopped it – and wonder more of the story – ??
also, had no idea about Smith – I know his name and some of his story – but this is crazy:
17 surgeries and a flesh eating disease – wow – I can see why you might wish he did retire – but then who knows how sad he would be –
and speaking of that – still tough to see Brady in a Tamp uniform

I really dig it.
I don’t know. I haven’t read anything that followed it up.
Peter King of NBC Sports says that if Smith takes one snap this season, he’s voting him in as Comeback Player of the Year. I can totally agree.
Brady isn’t going to conjure the same magic in Tampa. He had an unprecedented run, but it looks to be at its end.
